The Gray Catbird’s long song may last for up to 10 minutes. The male Gray Catbird uses his loud song to proclaim his territory. They are relatives of mockingbirds and thrashers, and they share that group’s vocal abilities, copying the sounds of other species and stringing them together to make their own song.

Pennsylvania has two species of vultures: the turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) and the black vulture (Coragyps atratus). The turkey vulture is by far the more common; it is found statewide, while the black vulture, more of a southern species, occasionally strays into southeastern Pennsylvania. This guy just wants to show off his plumage.

The Downy is the smallest woodpecker in North America and could be voted “most likely to visit a backyard feeder,” In this case, that’s what this little guy did just when I had the camera pointed in the right direction.

A very distinctive fish-hawk, formerly classified with other hawks but now placed in a separate family of its own. Along coastlines, lakes, and rivers almost worldwide, the Osprey is often seen flying over the water, hovering, and then plunging feet-first to catch fish in its talons. After a successful strike, the bird rises heavily from the water and flies away, carrying the fish head-forward with its feet.

The exotic Mute Swan is the elegant bird of Russian ballets and European fairy tales. This swan swims with its long neck curved into an S and often holds its wings raised slightly above its back. Mute Swans were first brought to North America to decorate ponds and lakes in towns and cities, and that’s still the best place to find these familiar waterfowl. You may also find them on shallow wetlands, lakes, rivers, and estuaries within the scattered range where they’ve become established in the wild.
